Tom Polacca

Linguist, Trader, Rancher, Social and Religious Advocate Tom Polacca (Properly PALAK'A'A Butterfly) (1853-1911), Leader of the Corn Clan of the Hopi Tribe, was a man of unusual wisdom. Although opposed, he spent much of his life working for education, sanitation and elimination of disease among his people, He assisted Dr. J.W. Fewkes of Smithsonian Institution in compiling his book on Hopi traditions and ceremonies. Upon accepting Mormonism, he reconciled his Hopi traditions with the teachings of his Church, and advised his people to await the return of Mormon Missionaries, who would bring the true story of the origin of the Indians.
